New High-Performance PLC's help integrate Bus Networks
with Industrial Ethernet

This is the first S7-300 CPU that provides three communication interfaces: a combined MPI/PROFIBUS DP interface, a pure PROFIBUS DP interface and a PROFINET interface.

Besides fast throughput, the CPU offers the following new features:

  • 256 connectable I/O devices on PROFINET
  • Clock synchronism at the PROFIBUS interface
  • Expanded open communication at Ethernet
  • Time synchronization via NTP on Ethernet

Integral PROFINET Industrial Ethernet and PROFIBUS DP communication ports allow connectivity to the widest range of industrial devices in the market. The PROFINET interface maintains up to 32 simultaneous active Industrial Ethernet connections to partner devices, and up to 256 field devices can be connected via PROFINET IO. Besides traditional messaging, both PROFINET and PROFIBUS DP allow real time I/O data to be sent deterministically, while linking the user program isochronously with the connected I/O devices.

This real time network performance, coupled with the superior speed of the controller, allow the most demanding of applications to be addressed, including data-intensive tasks, high speed closed loop and control motion tasks with Easy Motion Control.

Like PROFINET, commercial technology is used for the integrated Web Server capability (available end of 2006) that allows diagnostic and process data to be easily accessible from any Internet browser. This instant access allows users to quickly connect to their control system anywhere in the world, using off the shelf browsers.

CBA Functionality The CBA functionality integrated into the CPU 319-3 PN/DP enables an object-oriented approach to automation system design. Systems can be standardized using reusable components, enabling significant reduction in engineering costs. Additionally, CBA increases the flexibility to respond quickly to changing customer demands through rapid system changes with shortened commissioning times.

PROFINET I/O PROFINET I/O enables a communication concept for the implementation of modular, distributed applications. PROFINET I/O is based on Industrial Ethernet and enables the connection of distributed field devices and peripheral devices to the central processor module.
